Introduction
Almost every first-time enquiry we receive contains the same line: 'we'd like to see Komodo and Raja Ampat in 10 nights'. We always politely push back. Indonesia is enormous — a Komodo-to-Raja Ampat transit is 1.200 nautical miles, roughly Lisbon to Athens. This guide is about designing an itinerary you'll actually enjoy, not one that looks impressive on paper.
Rule One: One Region Per Trip
On a 7–10 night charter, you'll get a deeper, more relaxed experience by staying inside one cruising region. Komodo alone has 7 distinct anchorages worth a full day each. Raja Ampat needs at least 8 nights to do justice. Trying to combine them turns the trip into a transit log.
Exception: 14+ night charters
On a 2-week charter, multi-region itineraries become viable: Komodo + Sumbawa, or Raja Ampat + Banda Sea. Even then, plan two transit days each way and accept the trade-off.
Rule Two: Match the Season to the Region
Indonesia has two opposing monsoon systems — the same month can be perfect in one region and unfit in another. Use this as a starting calendar (also see our charter season calendar):
- April–October — Komodo, Sumbawa, Flores, Alor (dry season, glassy seas)
- October–April — Raja Ampat, Misool (calm season, best visibility)
- September–November — Banda Sea & Spice Islands (transition window)
- Year-round (with caveats) — North Sulawesi, Wakatobi
Rule Three: Embarkation Logistics Drive the Itinerary
The fastest path to a great charter is flying as close to your cruising area as possible. Long inter-island transits eat days you can't get back.
- Komodo: embark from Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Direct daily flights from Bali (1h).
- Raja Ampat: embark from Sorong (SOQ). Daily flights from Jakarta and Makassar.
- Banda Sea: embark from Ambon (AMQ). Less frequent flights — build a buffer day into Bali.
- North Sulawesi: embark from Manado (MDC).
Rule Four: Allow Buffer Days
Indonesian weather is mostly cooperative but not infinitely predictable. The best captains build in flex — one day in the schedule with no fixed plan, available for a longer stop at a favourite anchorage, or to wait out a passing squall. A 7-night itinerary should plan ~6 firm activity days and 1 floating day.
Sample Itinerary Frameworks by Length
5 nights — Komodo essentials
5-day Komodo: Labuan Bajo → Kanawa → Pink Beach → Padar sunrise → Manta Point → Rinca dragons → return. Tight but achievable.
7 nights — Komodo deep-dive
7-day Komodo: extends the 5-night with Sebayur, Kelor hike, and a quieter southern Komodo anchorage. Best balance for first-time guests.
8–10 nights — Raja Ampat full loop
10-day Raja Ampat: Sorong → Dampier Strait → Wayag → Piaynemo → southern Misool → return. Anything shorter than 8 nights forces you to skip Misool.
14+ nights — Multi-region
Komodo + Banda Sea (transition Oct–Nov), or Raja Ampat + Cenderawasih Bay whale sharks. Reserved for guests with time and a flexible date window.
What to Tell Your Charter Specialist
When you contact us to start planning, the four most useful pieces of information are:
- Group composition — adult-only, families, multi-generational, divers/non-divers.
- Date window flexibility — exact dates, ±3 days, or ±1 month.
- Activity priorities — diving, hiking, photography, total relaxation, mix.
- Budget framework — even a rough nightly range lets us shortlist properly.
